PARIS, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A number of French citizens are concerned that the implementation of a wider smoking ban could threaten one of France's cultural loves.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The Telegraph said Saturday that with the smoking ban set to take effect in all public places Jan. 2, some individuals say it could represent an end to the country's celebrated cafe culture.

Several people contend the smoking ban will directly infringe on their personal rights to enjoy the country's traditional cafe life.

"You can take out the first word from our motto: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity", said one regular French cafe patron, identified only as Fabienne. "We can no longer do what we like."

Despite such opposition, the Telegraph said a majority of French citizens are in full support of the health-conscious effort.

Recent polls indicate even most of the country's estimated 13.5 million smokers support the ban, which comes nearly a year after smoking was banned in more professional establishments.
