PHILADELPHIA, April 17 (UPI) -- Presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama says he will be a friend to the U.S. Jewish community and Israel and pledged a commitment to Israel's security.

Obama, in a meeting at Philadelphia's Rodeph Shalom synagogue, said his presidency would have "an unshakable commitment to Israel's security", the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Thursday.

The Illinois senator disagreed with former President Jimmy Carter's decision to meet with Hamas leaders, calling the Palestinian organization "a terrorist group intent on Israel's destruction."

Obama said he would continue the U.S. policy of vetoing anti-Israel resolutions at the United Nations, and would oppose the "right of return", the concept that Palestinians who left Israel at its founding should be able to go back at some point.

"Know that I will be there for you, just as I believe you will be there for me", he said.

Organizers of the Wednesday meeting said they had not yet scheduled similar question-and-answer sessions with Democratic hopeful Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
