HARTFORD, Conn., June 19 (UPI) -- A U.S. Air Force reservist had his rights violated when his employer failed to allow him to resume his job after a tour of active duty, a jury has found.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The Hartford (Conn.) Courant said a federal jury found that the Wachovia Securities deliberately violated a federal law by offering reservist Michael Serricchio a lesser position at lower pay when he returned from overseas.

Under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, any employer must reinstate veterans in their former positions within two weeks of ending a tour of active duty.

The jury found last Tuesday that Wachovia violated that law by granting Serricchio a different job at lower pay and is liable for double his missing back pay and additional damages.

Serricchio, who served in Saudi Arabia during his tour, said Wednesday that he was extremely pleased with the jury's verdict.

"There are still hundreds and hundreds of people overseas that are in the (National) Guard and reserves and there are more on the way", Serricchio told the Courant. "They are going to play a very big part and it is scary to come back and almost seem like you were punished as opposed to rewarded."
