OSHAWA, Ontario, June 24 (UPI) -- General Motors of Canada workers in Oshawa, Ontario, who are facing a plant closure next year got more bad news of an eight-week layoff this year.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

A notice was posted Monday informing workers at the truck plant that plummeting market demand meant production would stop not only for the scheduled two-week summer break next month, but an extra week, and possibly seven more during the year.

GM in the United States also announced production lulls at its Janesville, Wis., plant, the Toronto Star reported.

The Oshawa plant turned out about 320,000 trucks last year but production is down more than 70 percent in the first four months this year, the report said. Most of the trucks are exported to the United States but demand has plummeted amid record fuel prices and the collapse of new U.S. housing construction, the Star said.

More than 2,000 Oshawa workers face unemployment next year when GM closes the plant, along with one in Mexico and two in the United States.
