PHILADELPHIA, June 19 (UPI) -- Manufacturing activity in the Mid-Atlantic region contracted over the last month, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said Thursday.

The bank's general manufacturing index declined "slightly" from minus 15.6 in May to minus 17.1 in June, maintaining a downward trend for seven straight months, the report said.

Although 42 percent of the companies reporting indicated no change in activity for the month, the number of firms reporting declines doubled to 34 percent compared with the previous month, the report said.

The new orders index and current shipment indexes each declined by nine points, while unfilled orders and delivery times indexes remained in negative territory.

The current employment index also dropped, falling from minus 1.0 to minus 6.9 during the month, the fifth negative reading in that category in six months, the report said.

During May, 19 percent of the companies reporting indicated increases in employment, while 26 percent indicated employment had decreased.
