MIAMI, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- The nature of temporary work in the United States has changed, with most temps now holding professional degrees, industry analysts say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The professionals, who include accountants, computer programmers and engineers, also make up the fastest-growing portion of the temporary employment industry, The Miami Herald reported Monday.

"We're seeing a shift in the staffing industry", Roy Krause, president of Spherion, a large staffing company based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., told the newspaper. "Five or six years ago it was 60 percent light industrial/clerical and 40 percent professional." Now, he said, those figures have reversed, adding, "the professional side is growing faster."

Although some worry it's a sign employers remain intent on taking less responsibility for their workers' welfare, the trend is a positive one for the temp industry, and some professionals say they like the flexibility.

"When I need to take the time off, I can take the time off. If I want to work part of the year, I can work part of the year", Sheri Jordan, a marketing writer, told the Herald.
