BINGHAMTON, N.Y., June 25 (UPI) -- A Serbian athlete wanted for an alleged assault on a New York student may have fled the country with help from his country's government.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Miladin Kovacevic, 20, a 6-foot-9, 280-pound basketball player was charged with assault on a fellow Binghamton University student at a bar May 4. A Serbian official is believed to have posted his $100,000 bail and Kovacevic used an emergency passport to leave the United States, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

The alleged victim, Bryan Steinhauer, 22, suffered massive head injuries in the attack and was clinging to life in a medically induced coma. Kovacevic was arrested the day after the attack along with two other accused assailants. His bail was set at $100,000 and his passport was confiscated.

On June 6, the Serbian vice consul posted the bond in Broome County Court to free Kovacevic, a bail receipt obtained by the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin showed. Soon thereafter prosecutors received news from U.S. Customs Enforcement that Kovacevic, with an emergency Serbian passport, had left from Newark Airport on a flight bound for Frankfurt, Germany.
