YANGON, Myanmar, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- A United Nations special envoy arrived in Myanmar Saturday to meet with the government about ending the ongoing protests that have been erupting in violence.

Ibrahim Gambari will seek a meeting with Senior Gen. Than Shwe, the head of the military junta that has been clashing with pro-democracy activists in major cities.

A U.S. diplomat told CNN Gambari would likely tell Shwe about the growing international outrage over the violence and urge the junta to look for a peaceful solution to the crisis.

Several hundred protesters faced down security troops in Yangon Saturday. Although noisy, the latest protest rally proceeded peacefully despite a heavy presence of government troops, the BBC reported.

At least nine protesters, and likely many more, died earlier this week when troops use tear gas, beatings and bullets to breakup massive protests led by thousands of monks, who since have been arrested, beaten or locked in their monasteries.
