YANGON, Myanmar, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Myanmar's monks joined thousands of others Monday for an eighth day of street protests against the country's military rulers amid fears of a junta crack down.

The BBC reported witnesses as saying some 30,000 Monks and civilians took to the streets Monday in Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon. The demonstration was described as the largest in the past two decades.

The militaryleaders haven't taken action for fear of offending the public as Buddhist monks are highly respected in the country, which was formerly called Burma, the report said.

However, there are rising concerns that if the protests get out of hand, Myanmar could witness a crackdown similar to the one during the 1988 democracy uprising in which some 3,000 people died, the BBC said.

Mark Canning, Britain ambassador, told the BBC, there could be a counter-reaction, "which I've said would be a disaster, although in terms of probability it, I'm afraid, ranks quite high."

The Alliance of All Burmese Buddhist Monks vowed to continue the protest which began a month ago after the government sharply raised the price of fuel.
