DENVER, June 25 (UPI) -- Denver officials are citing the city's "no camping" laws in a dispute with organizers of a planned anti-war protest during the Democratic National Convention.

The city council is sticking to its guns when it comes to the planned gathering called "Tent State University" in City Park, which closes every night at 11 o'clock, the Rocky Mountain News reported Wednesday.

"Now, don't ask me how it's really going to shake out", City Councilwoman Carla Madison said. "But that's the way it's going to be: that they can put their tents up, but they can't camp out in them."

Organizers of the Aug. 24-28 event told the Rocky Mountain News that they want to convince the city to waive the rule. They said they planned to have professional security to keep an eye on things and pointed out it would probably be safer for the city to keep the anticipated crowd of several thousand in one place rather than scattering them through the streets at closing time.

"That's what happened in Chicago", organizer Adam Jung, said to the newspaper, referring to the 1968 convention in Chicago that degenerated into nightly clashes between police and Vietnam War protesters. "There was confusion and panic and nobody knew what was going on."
