GUATEMALA CITY, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- More than 1,000 Guatemalan farmers have waged protests over the arrest of one of their leaders, Prensa Libre newspaper reported Friday.

Amid the demonstrations, the farmers took 30 police officers hostage. Members of the protest have threatened to kill the officers one at a time.

The group's leader, Ramiro Choc, was arrested this month on robbery charges. He is also accused of inciting Guatemalan farmers to take over private and state lands.
