BRANSON, Mo., June 29 (UPI) -- While northern and eastern Missouri residents contended with Mississippi River flooding, those in the southwest battled flash floods Sunday, officials said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Heavy weekend rains prompted officials in Branson, Mo., to evacuate the city campground and the Red Cross has opened a shelter there to cope with flash flooding and the rising Lake Taneycomo, a man-made reservoir on the White River, KSPR-TV, Springfield, Mo., reported.

Branson Fire Chief Ted Martin told the station that runoff from smaller creeks and streams feeding into Lake Taneycomo caused the sudden rise.

Meanwhile, along the Mississippi, National Guard troops and local volunteers added support to a levee at West Alton, Mo., where they were trying to protect surrounding homes and farmland. Missouri Levee District official Harold Stephens told the Alton (Ill.) Telegraph sandbagging there would continue through Sunday.

"We do not have any sand boil problems at this time", he said. "It is important for people to understand just how much local area civilians have helped our efforts here and in Portage des Sioux. The volunteer efforts have been a tremendous help to us."
