ST. LOUIS, July 1 (UPI) -- Low-lying areas along the Mississippi River in Missouri and Illinois are emerging from their watery cover as flood waters withdraw back into their banks.

The region, however is bracing for another round of strong storms expected to reach the flood zone Wednesday and Thursday, AccuWeather.com reported Tuesday.

Residents living in river communities began returning to their homes to check damage caused by flooding during the last two weeks, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The river either crested or was expected to crest within days.

The river was expected to crest Tuesday at Chester, Ill., where some roads remained flooded, officials said.

St. Charles County, Mo., authorities told residents to be aware of increased train traffic, the Post-Dispatch said. Additional freight trains were rerouted through St. Charles because of flooded tracks elsewhere.

Forecasters said the new round of storms were expected to spread across the lower Great Lakes back toward the Mississippi Valley, AccuWeather.com said.

June ended soggily for Des Moines, Iowa, which received 13.39 inches of rain, well above its average of 4.57 inches, AccuWeather, com reported. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Omaha also had above-average amounts of rainfall not only for June, but also for April and May.
