BEIJING, April 22 (UPI) -- A cold front that killed thousands of livestock swept through northwest China, bringing sandstorms, snow and bitter cold to the region.

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region experienced Siberian-like temperatures of at least 70 below zero, though forecasts predicated a warming trend, China's official Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday.

The freezing weather destroyed nearly 2,000 acres of crops, about 69 percent of the region's production, and about 1,000 acres of fruit trees, Xinhua said. More than 100,000 livestock died in the bitter cold.

Regional officials estimated the damage at about $714 million.
