NEW YORK, June 24 (UPI) -- New York Rangers hockey tough guy Sean Avery says fashion is his real passion, explaining his current role as an intern at Vogue magazine.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Avery wrote about his experiences and his surprisingly negative feelings about sports and other athletes in an online article at mensvogue.com. He also described how his go-fer work at Vogue is hopefully a first step into a longer-term career after hockey, The New York Post reported Tuesday.

"I want to be a part of something creative -- either styling or editing at a magazine", wrote Avery, 28, who is a free agent without a team for the upcoming 2008-09 season.

While many fans might be shocked at the hockey player's thirst for fashion, it shouldn't be a surprise to those that really know him, said Avery.

"What started innocently enough with my first tie-dyed Chip & Pepper shirt at age 12 has evolved over a decade and a half into a closet full of Dries Van Noten, YSL, Dior and Costume National, to name a few", Avery wrote.
