HUNTERSVILLE, N.C., July 9 (UPI) -- Two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart will leave Joe Gibbs Racing at the end of this season, the organization announced Wednesday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Stewart raced for Gibbs for 12 years, winning championships in 2002 and 2005. He won 32 races and finished in the top 10 in points in eight of the last nine seasons.

The veteran driver's contract with Gibbs had run through 2009 but the two sides agreed to part ways after the 2008 season.

"We've had a lot of success with Tony in our 12 years here at Joe Gibbs Racing", Gibbs President J.D. Gibbs said. "While this moment is bittersweet, we're parting on good terms and we know that each of us has benefited greatly from the other."

Stewart is expected to make an announcement Thursday on his future NASCAR plans.
