DARLINGTON, S.C., May 9 (UPI) -- Greg Biffle won his first Sprint Cup pole of the season Friday and will start out front in Saturday's Dodge Challenger 500 at the Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Biffle circled the newly paved track in 27.405 seconds to establish a record of 179.442 mph. That cracked the mark of 173.797 mph established by Ward Burton 12 years ago.

The pole is the fifth of Biffle's NASCAR career.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start on the outside of the first row after turning a lap in 27.418 seconds.

The second row will consist of two-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart.

Kyle Busch, who took over the points lead last week in Richmond, will start sixth.
