Jose Molina was hit by an offering thrown by losing pitcher Lenny DiNardo (1-2) with one out.

Both closers give up RBI hits in the ninth inning, sending the contest into extra innings.

Ryan Sweeney's RBI single off Mariano Rivera gave Oakland a 3-2 lead, while Oakland's Huston Street blew a save for the fifth time this season when Wilson Betemit's RBI single created a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the ninth.

Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera also had one RBI each and Robinson Cano had four of the 13 hits for the Yankees, who have won three of four.

The winner was David Robertson (1-0).

Sweeney added a fifth-inning sacrifice fly, one run scored on Jose Veras's seventh-inning wild pitch and four players had two hits for the Athletics, who have lost four in a row.
