Matsuzaka rose to 16-2 this season, pitching in place of the injured Josh Beckett, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list after a visit to orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews to discuss his ailing right elbow.

Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay both knocked in three Boston runs. Two others had one RBI.

Dustin Pedroia led a 15-hit attack with four hits and scored three times. David Ortiz had three hits, scored twice, and one RBI.

Youkilis and two others had two hits for the Red Sox, winners in seven of their last 11 games.

Jermaine Dye and Alexei Ramirez had one hit each for the AL Central-leading White Sox, who have split their last four contests.

Losing pitcher Javier Vazquez (10-12) yielded five earned runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.
