| PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- The Philadelphia Phillies signed free agent first baseman Matt Stairs on Friday, adding a left-handed hitter for the stretch drive to the playoffs. SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS Stairs, 41, was released Thursday by Toronto. He was the Blue Jays' designated hitter and was hitting .250 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI. He is expected to give the defending NL East champion Phillies a left-handed hitter off the bench and will backup form NL MVP Ryan Howard at first. Greg Dobbs is the Phillies' lone left-handed batter off the bench.
