AUGUSTA, Maine, July 2 (UPI) -- Maine tourism officials say conflicts are growing between hunters who want to shoot moose with guns and tourists who only want to shoot them with cameras.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Hunters are lobbying Maine state officials for more moose hunting permits, while "moose safari" tour operators and environmentalists are opposing them as more people demand access to the state's vast landscape, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

"It's a challenge", Phil Savignano, senior tourism official for the Maine Office of Tourism, told the Globe. "Maine is changing There is clearly a decline in hunting and a growth in wildlife viewing. But we want both to exist."

About 65,000 hunters from around the country enter an annual lottery to receive one of Maine's 3,000 moose hunting permits. But at the same time, the state's prime moose areas have seen moose-tour operators increase to around 10, tourism officials say.

Recent surveys estimate there are more moose in the state than previously thought, increasing pressure to allow more hunting permits, the Globe reported.
