UNITED NATIONS, N.Y., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Iran delivered a document that may be its response to the U.N. Security Council plus Germany package aimed at convincing Tehran to suspend its nuclear program.

Initial reports indicate Iran is asking for more talks and doesn't mention the incentives-laden proposal, The Christian Science Monitor reported Tuesday.

But Press TV, the official Iranian broadcaster, reported that a senior Iranian security official denied reports that Iran handed over a response.

"What was handed over to (EU) foreign policy chief Javier Solana was a written transcription of the discussions he had with Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili over the telephone (Monday), not a response to the ... package of proposals", a Supreme National Security Council official said.

"We have received the letter but we do not know its contents yet", a diplomatic source told RIA Novosti, the Russian news agency.

The letter has first to be analyzed by Solana and negotiators from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council -- China, France, Russia, the United States and Britain -- and Germany. U.S. State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said a conference call is scheduled for Wednesday.

"Obviously, as we've stated before, we're looking for a clear, positive response from Iran; and in the absence of that, we're going to have no choice but to pursue further measures against them as part of our dual-track strategy" of incentives and sanctions, he said.
