OSLO, Norway, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Equipment from the wreck of the Russian cruiser Murmansk, which sits just off a village in northern Norway, appears to be radioactive, officials say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The Murmansk broke loose from a tow taking it to India in 1994. The vessel came to rest against rocks off Sorvaer in Finnmark.

The radiation was discovered by Eurovironment, a recycling company that planned to remove some of the ship's electronic equipment, Aftenposten reported.

"We have a zero tolerance for radioactivity", said Trond Lore, head of Eurovironment.

Ole Reistad of the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority said that radiation readings are low but high enough that people should not come into direct contact with the ship or its equipment.

Olaf Braastad of the environmental group Bellona disagreed with Reistad's characterization of the radioactivity as a "minor event."

"Not only is the cruiser, which lies in the middle of a tourist paradise, full of environmentally hazardous chemicals, it turns out that it contains radioactive material as well", he said.
