AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 25 (UPI) -- The information superhighway and actual highway driving may merge in 2009 if U.S. automaker Chrysler LLC has anything to say about it.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Chrysler is set to announce it will install UConnect Web wireless technology in all of its 2009 models, sources close to the company said.

"It's a notion of always wanting to be connected wherever you are", Scott Slagle, Chrysler's senior manager of global marketing strategy, told the Los Angeles Times Wednesday.

But safety advocates expressed alarm at the idea of drivers surfing the Web while cruising down the road.

"Surfing the Web is something people really don't have any business doing while they drive", Jonathan Adkins, a spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Association said. "It's definitely a distraction."

Chrysler's engineer for UConnect Web Keefe Leung said the company was "relying on the responsibility of the consumer" to obey current laws.

Like Chrysler, Avis Rent A Car, which has offered a similar mobile Web service, said the device "is not for use by the driver while operating the vehicle", the Times reported.
