LJUBLJANA, Slovenia, June 9 (UPI) -- Mideast tensions and Kosovo's independence will be on tap when U.S. President George Bush meets with European Union members in Slovenia, the White House said.

When the summit opens Tuesday in Ljubljana, leaders are expected to discuss ways to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, methods to support peace and democracy in the Middle east and how to support Kosovo's independence and development, Judy Ansley, national security adviser for regional affairs, said during a press briefing.

Ansley said she anticipated discussions on democracy in Latin America as well as ways to reduce tensions in Abkhazia and a number of economic issues

"And on Afghanistan and Iraq, we discuss ways that both the EU and the U.S. will continue to support these new democracies", she said.

Bush's trip to Europe coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Marshall Plan and the Berlin Airlift, she said, "which highlights the United States' role in supporting the transition to a prosperous Europe, which is increasingly whole, free and at peace."

The EU is "truly a partner for the U.S. now in confronting a whole series of global challenges, and advancing freedom and prosperity around the world", she said.
