BANGKOK, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush and the Thai prime minister agreed to improve relations through health and education, and security issues, the two leaders said.

"We discussed the strengthening of the close military and the security cooperation, which benefit both countries and the region", said Thailand Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej during a media availability with Bush in Bangkok. "We agreed to enhance the Thai-U.S. relation by focusing on education, public health, sciences, security and law enforcement cooperation."

Bush noted the two countries had worked together on many fronts -- fighting the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and the avian flu, as well as working to help the cyclone victims in Myanmar, the country formerly known as Burma. He also said Thailand was a partner in the war on terror.

"Thailand's troops have helped the people of Iraq and Afghanistan as they battle extremists and strengthen their democracy, and I want to thank you for those contributions, Mr. Prime Minister", Bush said.

The United States and Thailand are working to expand freedom with good governance", he said. "I want to thank you very much and congratulate the people of Thailand for restoring its democracy."

Bush visited Seoul and Bangkok while en route to Beijing to attend the Summer Olympics.
