A Sept. 7-10 Zogby interactive poll asked 7,081 U.S. residents who participated "which political party do you have more confidence in to keep American safe from terrorism."

The response was clear -- if not a majority -- as 44.6 percent of those asked said "the Republican Party." Another 34.1 percent chose the Democratic Party while 18.2 percent said "neither." Another 3.2 percent said they weren't sure.

Republican participants seemed more sure of their own party as 87.6 percent of them chose the GOP as the party to keep the country safe and 2.2 percent said the Democrats. Among Democratic respondents, 73.2 percent said the Democratic Party and 6.8 percent said the Republican Party.

Among independents, Republicans were named by 41.4 percent, "neither" by 33.3 percent and Democrats by 22.2 percent.

There is a 1.2 percentage-point margin of error in the data.
