South Florida Sun-Sentinel Aug. 7--MIAMI -- A Florida Keys commercial fisherman is facing federal charges for allegedly poaching thousands of lobsters and damaging the environment.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

U.S. Attorney R. Alex Acosta said Thursday that 41-year-old David Dreifort could get up to five years in prison if convicted. Dreifort also could lose his boat and gear.

Acosta says Dreifort had more than 6,000 lobster tails when he was arrested. That's more than 1,000 times the legal bag limit for the recent Florida lobster mini-season.

Dreifort allegedly used concrete, metal and other materials to make underwater lobster traps. Officials say that damaged coral and sea grasses.

Dreifort was due in court later Thursday. It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
