PRETORIA, South Africa, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A new power-sharing agreement has Zimbabweans feeling hopeful the country can tackle its economic problems, a social leader said Tuesday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

George Mkwananzi, deputy chairman of the the National Constitutional Assembly, a non-governmental organization, said citizens are excited that President Robert Mugabe's ZANU-PF party and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change have reached a deal to divide power in a unity government because the country can now move forward to fix its tanking economy.

"Obviously Zimbabweans are reacting to that piece of news with excitement because that is what they have been waiting for all along", Mkwananzi told the Voice of America in South Africa. "It was ZANU-PF that has been a stumbling block to the conclusion of the agreement and effecting it into a workable system."

Mkwananzi said Mugabe's supporters were intransigent in their refusal to share key government ministries with the MDC, adding, "so, this is an indication that they are now psyched up to share with MDC whatever those ministries were."

Mkwananzi also told VOA that Mugabe himself had become more willing than his supporters to share power, and is blaming his party for his failure to win a victory in the March presidential election.
