ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, July 3 (UPI) -- The Pakistani government's new offensive against Islamist insurgents is "not very effective", several Pakistani politicians say.

Awami National Party official Lateef Afridi, whose party is dominant in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province, said the paramilitary efforts against regional insurgents are merely "halfhearted" attempts, The Washington Post said Thursday.

"The action is not very fast, not very effective and not very well-oriented", Afridi said. "People are complaining that such halfhearted measures won't work."

"It won't work unless the government hits the right targets, unless the government strikes at the true leadership of these extremists", he added.

The new Frontier Corps efforts began last Friday when paramilitary troops arrived in the northwestern locales such as the city of Peshawar.

The military actions quickly seized several large weapons caches and arrested at least 31 people in the region, government officials said.

Pakistani security forces have dubbed the anti-insurgency efforts "The Right Path" for its focus on aggressive military action aimed at eliminating the Taliban's control of the region and the Afghan border, the Post reported.
