ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Pakistan's powerful military met with lawmakers in a rare secret session to brief the latter about its fight against terrorism in the country.

The meeting with lawmakers from both houses of Parliament largely dealt with the worsening situation in Pakistan's tribal areas and in the western region near Afghanistan, Dawn reported Thursday.

A statement from the parliamentary speaker said the briefing was conducted by Maj. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, director general for military operations.

Dawn reported that in only the third such secret session in Parliament's history, the military leaders discussed the source of arms supply and modern communications systems of the militants and their "limitations" in coping with airspace violations by U.S. drones and helicopters, the newspaper said.

The lawmakers also were told the armed forces cannot win the battle against war-hardened militants without political support.

U.S. officials have said the Taliban and al-Qaida terrorists holed up in these regions use the territory to launch cross-border attacks on U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Dawn reported a number of Pakistani lawmakers said they were not satisfied with the military briefing as it lacked depth and diagnosis.
