ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Pakistan says 32 militants were killed in clashes in the Bajaur tribal area but it was not clear whether the dead included a senior Taliban commander.

The militants died in two different attacks Thursday in Bajaur, the Pakistan Post reported. The military has been waging a major campaign in the Taliban-strong area.

In the first attack, the military said its gunship helicopters struck two vehicles carrying militants and explosives in Inayat Kalley, killing 10 militants, the report said.

Some reports said Taliban commander Maulvi Faqir was in one of the vehicles hit, but the Post report quoted Taliban spokesman Maulvi Umer as saying Faqir is safe.

In the second attack, the military said gunship helicopters targeted a madarassa seminary in Sewai area of Bajaur, killing at least 22 suspected militants, the Post report said.

The News put the toll at 33. The report quoted a senior military official as saying the vehicles carrying Maulvi Faqir were targeted, but the official said he was "not sure" whether the Taliban commander was killed.

Pakistan's Dawn newspaper reported the operations in Bijuar and nearby Mohmand Agency have forced many residents to flee the areas.
