The city, home to Pakistan's army headquarters, has been on edge due to an ongoing military offensive against militants in the country's tribal areas, CNN reports.

The news organization says residents thought the noise was the result of a bomb explosion.

Initially, the air force told CNN that it didn't have any flights in the air at the time.

Later, it issued a statement saying that one of its jet had broken the sound barrier as it was shifting altitude over Rawalpindi.
