BRUSSELS, July 27 (UPI) -- More than 63 percent of all TV broadcasts in the European Union were created in Europe, new figures show.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The figures from a new European Commission report regarding broadcasts between 2005 and 2006 show that independent European producers accounted for more than 36 percent of European broadcasts during that time period, a European Union news release said Friday.

The release said Europe-based broadcasts accounted for 63.52 percent of all 2005 broadcasts and 65.05 percent in 2006, while independent works increased from 36.44 percent in 2005 to 37.59 percent in 2006.

Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding said the study's findings indicate the European Union's attempts to promote European works had been successful.

"Today's figures demonstrate the vitality of the EU audiovisual industry and the equal commitment of all EU member states (old and new) to cultural diversity. With the application of the 'Television without Frontiers' Directive, the EU and the member states are proving their commitment to cultural diversity, which continues to benefit from the major presence of European programming on European TV", Reding said.
