SANAA, Yemen, March 23 (UPI) -- Top Palestinian officials representing both Hamas and Fatah reportedly agreed Sunday in Yemen to conduct additional negotiations in two weeks.

While the Palestinian leaders did discuss a proposal from Yemen that a fresh round of Palestinian elections take place in return for Hamas surrendering control of Gaza, the only accepted discussion point was for additional talks, CNN reported.

The two divided factions formed a unity government in 2007, but it was dissolved by Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas once Hamas took control in Gaza.

The initial formation of the unified government had been aimed at prompting the international community to resume aid to the region. International aid was cut off in 2006 after Hamas won that year's legislative elections.

Funding from the United States ended due to the fact U.S. officials consider Hamas a terrorist group, CNN said.
