CAIRO, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Kidnappers have released a group of European tourists and their Egyptian guides after taking them hostage 10 days ago, Italian officials said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The five Italians, five Germans and one Romanian, along with their guides were reportedly traveling to Cairo and said to be in good health, the BBC reported Monday.

The group was abducted while touring a remote region near the Egypt-Sudan border.

Details behind the group's release weren't revealed. It was unclear whether the $8.8 million ransom the kidnappers demanded was paid, the BBC said.

The breakthrough came after Sudanese troops Sunday fought with the alleged kidnappers in northern Sudan, killing six and taking two into custody. The two claimed the kidnapped people were in Chad but their whereabouts at the time of the rescue was unclear.

Chad government officials denied the group was inside the country's borders.

The Sudanese military said, in a statement, the vehicle seized contained weapons and documents detailing how the ransom should have been paid, the BBC reported. Other documents indicated a faction of the Darfur rebel Sudan Liberation Army was involved.
