CAIRO, May 29 (UPI) -- Human Rights Watch has criticized an Egyptian court for upholding prison sentences for five men arrested in a campaign targeting people with HIV.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The New York based organization said the May 28 ruling "underscores the Egyptian government's dangerous indifference to public health and justice."

The ruling upheld the sentences imposed on five men convicted May 7 on charges of "habitual practice of debauchery", a phrase used by Egypt's legal system to refer to consensual homosexual contact between men.

Human Rights Watch said the men were targeted because they suffer from human immunodeficiency virus, the virus that causes AIDS.

"To send these men to prison because of their HIV status is inhuman and unjust", said Joe Amon, director of the HIV/AIDS program at Human Rights Watch. "Police, prosecutors, and doctors have already abused them and violated their most basic rights, and now fear has trumped justice in a court of law."
