MOSCOW, March 26 (UPI) -- Despite a political gaffe by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Moscow and Russian officials hailed his visit as positive on the energy and diplomatic front.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Mubarak said following his meeting in Moscow that he thought Russian President Vladimir Putin and President-elect Dmitry Medvedev looked alike, noting, "In this respect, there's little difference between you two."

Putin brushed aside the faux pas, signing a joint framework to develop a peaceful nuclear program with the Egyptian president, The Moscow Times said Wednesday.

Egypt is looking to expand its energy resources as Russia pledged to help several Central Asia countries establish nuclear reactors.

Analysts suggested Moscow wants to boost its military sales to Egypt in exchange for help with its nuclear program but others see that as difficult because the United States has a corner on the market following a fallout from Anwar Sadat's decision to expel Soviet advisers from Egypt in 1972, the Times said.

The pair also discussed the possibility of having a Middle East summit in Moscow as Russia vies to position itself as a Middle East power broker, the Times said.
