BAGHDAD, July 27 (UPI) -- U.S. soldiers fired hundreds of rounds on a car carrying innocent civilians, killing three of them, U.S. military officials said Sunday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The officials were referring to a June 25 incident in which a U.S. platoon opened fire on the car, which was en route to Baghdad Airport, The New York Times reported. A man and two women in the car were killed.

After the incident, U.S. officials issued a news release characterizing the victims as criminals, claiming they had fired on U.S. troops and that a weapon had been found in the car.

U.S. officials issued a statement Sunday saying "a thorough investigation determined that the driver and passengers were law-abiding citizens of Iraq." The statement said U.S. soldiers fired warning shots before taking appropriate "escalation of force" measures that eventually led them to open fire on the car's occupants.

The attack contributed to growing demands among Iraqi politicians for the U.S. military to withdraw from Iraq after a United Nations mandate expires at the end of the year -- unless the United States permits its military personnel to be prosecuted under Iraqi law for attacks on civilians, the newspaper said.
