| TRIPOLI, Lebanon, June 22 (UPI) -- One person was killed and 24 were injured in an outbreak of political violence in Tripoli, the Lebanese military said Sunday. SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS Government authorities say the city saw clashes between supporters of the Western-backed government and Alawite gunmen, who back the country's opposition movement, Alalam Satellite TV reported. The gun battles spread from the northern sectors of the city to the al-Qobbe zone in the east, where families were seen fleeing the violence, the TV news said. A military spokesman said the fighting had eased in intensity by Sunday night and the government was "working to contain them." Alalam said the fighting was similar to clashes that took place in Lebanon in early May when 65 people were killed in battles between pro- and anti-government forces. An agreement reached in Doha between government and opposition leaders on May 21 cooled the tensions. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Related News Topics:
