| ANKARA, Turkey, March 22 (UPI) -- A leftist Turkish newspaper columnist was arrested early Friday in a crackdown on opponents of the ruling party. SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS The government said Ilhan Selcuk, a columnist for Cumhuriyet, and other detainees are suspected of plotting a military coup. Dogu Perincek, leader of the Workers' Party, and Kemal Alemdaroglu, a professor and former rector of Istanbul University, were also arrested. Police raided party offices and a television station at 4:30 a.m., a Workers' Party official said. Selcuk, 85, has been writing columns for Cumhuriyet since 1963. He was arrested in the 1970s during a state of emergency declared by the military. His books include "I Think, Therefore Shoot Me" and "Left-wing Sharia."
