ANKARA, Turkey, March 29 (UPI) -- Suspected Kurdish rebel sites in northern Iraq were targeted this week by cross-border shelling by Turkish military forces.

Turkish artillery and aircraft have been targeting the suspected sites the last few days and at least 15 rebels were confirmed to have been killed Thursday, the BBC reported Saturday. Rebel casualties from an air strike Friday had not been determined, the British network said.

The attacks follow similar assaults by the Turkish military, which targeted other suspected Kurdish bases last month.

The Turkish military said those bases housed an estimated 3,000 Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, rebels.

Military officials had estimated at least 240 PKK rebels died during those attacks, but Kurdish officials have dispute that claim.

The reported deaths brought the total death toll from the regional PKK conflict to more than 30,000 people, the BBC said.
