OSLO, Norway, July 30 (UPI) -- Norwegian farmers, eager to retain government subsidies, cheered the breakdown of World Trade Organization talks, sources said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Although Norway's food prices are the highest in the world, Norwegian farmers fear a deal would cut subsidies and protective tariffs, leaving them with less income and increased foreign competition for their goods, Aftenposten reported Wednesday.

But, other groups in Norway said the farmers are pushing their luck.

Concerned that Norway's businesses will be unable to support high farm subsidy levels indefinitely, Lars Sponheim, a farmer and former minister of Agriculture, called the trade negotiations breakdown "tragic", the report said. The farmers' reaction was "Norway at its worst", he said.

Reidar Nilsen, head of the Norwegian fishing lobby Norges Fiskarlag, told Aftenposten the danger existed for countries to move toward bilateral agreements that could hurt the Norway's critical seafood industry.
