BERNE, Switzerland, April 29 (UPI) -- World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick called in Switzerland Tuesday for immediate action on food shortages and denounced the banning of food exports.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Rice export bans, initiated by several countries this month, "encourage hoarding, drive up prices and hurt the poorest people", Zoellick said in a statement released after a meeting of the U.N. System Chief Executives Board for Coordination in Berne, Switzerland.

Zoellick called for $755 million in emergency funds. "Roughly $475 million has been pledged, but pledges won't feed hungry mouths", he said. "Donors must put their money on the table."

He also called for "a short, medium and long-term response" to address world hunger.

Responses should include increased food production, conditional cash transfer programs, studies on biofuels and "action on the trade front", he said.
