UNITED NATIONS, N.Y., June 26 (UPI) -- North Korea's declaration of its nuclear programs is a "very encouraging development" in denuclearizing the Korean peninsula, the U.N. Secretary-General said.

North Korea turned over details of its nuclear program Thursday to China, the chair of the six-party talks held to achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula peacefully. Other countries at the table are Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.

North Korea's submission of its program details "followed by the reciprocal actions of the United States, are important steps forward", Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a news release, referring to President George W. Bush's announcement that he was preparing to remove the country from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism and lift some economic sanctions.

Ban called on all six participants to move expeditiously toward full implementation of a 2005 agreement under which North Korea would abandon its nuclear program in exchange for economic aid and security guarantees.

"I strongly support their efforts towards this end", Ban said.
