CLAYTON, Mo., July 19 (UPI) -- A former Missouri Department of Natural Resources supervisor should receive $337,000 for being forced to endure a hostile work environment, a jury has ruled.

A St. Louis County Circuit Court jury found that Mohamad Alhalabi, who is of Lebanese descent, faced a hostile work environment following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and the U.S invasion of Iraq, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Saturday.

The 12 jurors found that Alhalabi should receive $187,000 for lost wages and medical expenses because his superiors did nothing to alleviate the increased workplace pressure.

The jury also found Alhalabi should receive an additional $150,000 in punitive damages for the reckless actions of Missouri officials regarding the state employee's personal rights.

Alhalabi, who resigned his post, also alleged he had been discriminated against due to his ethnic heritage and was demoted for complaining about the discrimination.

The jury ruled in favor of the state regarding Alhalabi's claims on those counts, the Post-Dispatch said.
