CHICAGO, July 1 (UPI) -- A Chicago legal group says it will appeal a ruling supporting the police department's refusal to release data on the use of lineups to identify suspects.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

A Cook County judge Monday ruled against the request from the Roderick MacArthur Justice Center at Northwestern University, which is looking into a controversial lineup method in which witnesses see suspects one at a time instead of all at once.

"We can't conduct a thorough, scientific review of this information without access to all of the data used to reach the conclusions set forth in this report", said Scott Ehlers, state legislative director for the lawyers group.

The attorneys are seeking a 2006 internal report they say shows that the old-style lineups were more accurate.

The police department objected to turning over the raw data on the grounds it contained the names of witnesses and was not covered by the Freedom of Information Act.
