HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., July 1 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles-area police department has agreed to settle a suit by a gay officer by paying him $4,000 a month for the rest of his life.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Adam Bereki, 29, has already been paid a $150,000 lump sum by Huntington Beach, The Orange County Register reported. The rest of the money will be paid as lifetime disability.

Bereki in his lawsuit said that his problems began about a year after he joined the department in 2001. While he refused to say anything when other officers asked him if he was gay, he said that they began a campaign against him.

For example, when he had a doctor's appointment, he was asked if he was being treated for HIV infection.

"It seems from this case that a gay in the cop culture is trouble", said his lawyer, James Trout. "They really relentlessly harassed and ridiculed him. They made his life miserable and he couldn't tolerate it

anymore."

Bereki said that he complained to superiors without any result. The department is now conducting its own internal investigation of his complaints.
